ARKANSAS MINORITY HEALTH COMMISSION ANNOUNCES A COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR IN LITTLE ROCK

LITTLE ROCK--The Arkansas Minority Health Commission (AMHC) will host a health fair on Thursday, February 25, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the State Capitol Rotunda in Little Rock.

Free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and sickle cell will be provided for legislators, staff and constituents. Vendors will be on hand to provide important health information.

“The Arkansas Minority Health Commission conducts free health screenings throughout the state,” says Idonia Trotter, executive director of the AMHC. “This is an opportunity for legislators and the public to see the critical free services and health information provided by the AMHC to disparate communities throughout the state.

A LEGISLATIVE PUBLIC FORUM FAIR IN LITTLE ROCK

LITTLE ROCK--The Senate Subcommittee on Minority Health of the Arkansas General Assembly will host a legislative public forum on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010. This will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the State Capitol Room 151.
The meeting is open to all residents, minority residents (African American, Hispanic, Asian and American Indian) of the area are encouraged to attend and share with legislators what type of health services they would like to have in their region or county and ask questions of their elected officials.

Attendees will be provided with a synopsis of public health concerns expressed by citizens living in counties where life expectancy at birth based on death data shows that minorities die 10 years earlier than non-minorities. Speakers will also present information on recent legislation passed in 2009 that will impact public health. Dinner will be provided.

Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Minority Health, Sen. Jack Crumbly, Sen. Percy Malone, and other committee members will be present. Local representatives, senators, county judges and mayors have also been invited. Spanish interpreters will be available.

The Arkansas Minority Health Commission (AMHC), in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health, will kick off the New Year with a health event in January for residents in and near the surrounding St. Francis County community.

A Community Health Fair will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Forrest City Civic Center, located at 1335 North Washington in Forrest City. Free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, immunization, vision, sickle cell, dental and many more will be provided. Health related vendors will be on hand to provide important information. A free box lunch will be provided to each health fair participant.

“The Arkansas Minority Health Commission conducts free health screenings throughout the state,” says Idonia Trotter, executive director of the AMHC. “In particular, we aim to provide these services to the minority communities and surrounding counties that otherwise may not be able to access these types of free services. We will also have Spanish interpreters at the community health fair. In addition, literature will be in both Spanish and English,” Trotter said.

The Senate Subcommittee on Minority Health of the Arkansas General Assembly will convene on Friday, October 23.  This public forum takes place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fordyce Civic Center, located at 300 Hwy 79/167 Bypass in Fordyce.

Although the meeting is open to all residents, minority residents (African American, Hispanic, Asian and American Indian) of the area are encouraged to attend.  Participants will have an opportunity to share with legislators what type of health services they would like to have in their region or county and ask questions of their elected officials.

THE ARKANSAS MINORITY HEALTH COMMISSION provides free HEALTH screenings in Helena-West Helena, AR

The Arkansas Minority Health Commission provided free health screenings to the community of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. Health screenings were offered to the community at the Delta Area Health Education Center on June 11, 2009. There were 60 people in attendance at the event. Screenings offered were for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, prostate, HIV, and Sickle Cell traits. Also the American Red Cross provided opportunities for blood donations. Several non-profit organizations participated including: Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation, Living Well with Sickle Cell, Delta Area Health Education Center, Phillips County Department of Human Services, Tri-County Rural Health Network, Walnut Street Works, the Helena School District and the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office.

Although refreshments were provided to all in attendance, several box lunches were shared with The Family Center, Inc.

The mission of The Arkansas Minority Health Commission is to ensure all minority Arkansans access to health care that is equal to the care provided to other citizens of the state and to seek ways to provide education, address, treat, and prevent diseases and conditions that are prevalent among minority populations. Arkansas Minority Health Commission would like to thank all the organizations for participating in our Public Health Forum that was held on July 29 2004 at Lee High School. Your presence and your services helped many Lee County Citizens.

Come Join Us in Eudora at our Public Forum

On behalf of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission (AMHC), we would like to extend an invitation to you to our quarterly Public Health Forum.

In an effort to increase personal awareness of minority health issues, AMHC will also provide free screenings on December 2, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and from 6:30-8:00p.m. we will have our Public Forum. AMHC is happy to make this service available to Chicot County and surrounding areas. The location will be announced at a later date.
